UFB increases speeds

Lightwire is bringing the speed

Chorus, the fibre company that provides Ultra Fast Fibre (UFB) across Auckland, Wellington, most of the South Island and many other towns, has made some big changes to its UFB speeds, and a few of the other Local Fibre Companies (LFC) have followed suit, so we are using it as an opportunity to help you get ahead.

First, a couple of quick definitions to help this make sense…

  • BS2 Evolve = the entry-level fibre service Chorus offers for business, the SLA is weak, and fault restore targets are 1-2 days, but it is fast and low cost.
  • BS2 SBF = the same as BS2 Evolve except that it has an enterprise-level service level agreement, providing a 6-hour restore target.
  • All speeds reference Mbps unless stated otherwise
  • Max means best-effort up to 1Gbps

What's happening?

In an attempt to stay ahead of the threat of 5G eating away at market share, Chorus is:

  • Increasing the speed of its entry-level SBF service from 100Mbps to a symmetrical 500Mbps.
  • Getting rid of 200/200 Evolve as a service, replacing it with the Max/500 service going forward.

How we are making this a great outcome for you

Please keep in mind that the following relate to Chorus services only, but the good news is that:

  • We will be updating our rate card to make the 500/500 SBF service our entry-level service, sold at the same rate as our 100/100 service is currently offered.
  • All existing 100/100 services can be moved to 500/500 at the same rate on a new term.
  • New Max/500 services from Chorus will be provided at a reduced rate, the same price as 200/200 services were offered at.
  • Existing Max/500 services can have a new price applied on a term re-sign.
  • All 200/200 services can be moved to Max/500 with no change in price on anew contract term.

What about Enable and Tuatahi First Fibre (formerly UFF)?

They are making similar moves, but not quite the same, with their new baseline service offering 300/300 speeds.

In these areas, we will make the following changes:

  • We will be updating our rate card to make the 300/300 BS2 service our entry-level service, sold at the same rate as our 100/100 service is currently offered.
  • All existing 100/100 services can be moved to 300/300 at the same rate on a new term.
  • New Max/500 services from Enable and TFF will be provided at a reduced rate, now aligning with those from Chorus.
  • Existing Max/500 services can have a new price applied on a term re-sign.
  • All 200/200 services can be moved to Max/500 with a drop in price on a new contract term.

What about Unison?

Again they are making similar moves but following Chorus a bit closer with our entry-level service offering 500/500 speeds.

In these areas, we will make the following changes:

  • We will be updating our rate card to make the 500/500 BS2 service our entry-level service, sold at the same rate as our 100/100 service is currently offered.
  • All existing 100/100 services can be moved to 500/500 at the same rate on a new term.
  • New Max/500 services from Unison will be provided at a reduced rate, now aligning with those from Chorus.
  • Existing Max/500 services can have the new price applied on a term re-sign.
  • All 200/200 services can be moved to Max/500 with a drop in price on a new contract term.
